What is a PD catheter?

A PD catheter, also called a peritoneal dialysis catheter, is a catheter used for peritoneal dialysis. This kidney disease treatment uses the peritoneum in your abdomen to filter body toxins and clean your blood. Your peritoneum is a membrane that lines your abdominal cavity and organs in your abdomen.

After placing the catheter in your abdominal cavity, you can safely complete dialysis as directed by your specialist. The treatment involves instilling dialysis fluid into your abdomen and removing it after completing peritoneal dialysis.

Is a PD catheter right for me?

After reviewing your medical history, symptoms, lifestyle, lab work, and treatment preferences, a kidney specialist determines if you’re a candidate for peritoneal dialysis and need a PD catheter. They may complete other diagnostic tests to evaluate kidney function and create an effective treatment plan that matches your individualized needs.

How should I prepare for PD catheter placement?

Follow your surgeon’s instructions to prepare for PD catheter placement. Avoid food and drink after midnight the night before your scheduled procedure. Take any medications as instructed with just a small sip of water. Your surgeon may ask you to stop taking certain medicines. Make plans to have a family member or friend drive you home after surgery.

What happens during PD catheter surgery?

Your provider cleans and numbs the treatment area. They offer a sedative to relax you or anesthesia to make you fall asleep. The Murrieta Valley Surgery Associates team uses laparoscopic guidance to view the inside of your abdomen and place a catheter in your pelvis. The procedure often lasts about an hour, and you can go home the same day.

What should I expect after the procedure?

Follow your post-surgery instructions after receiving a PD catheter. Begin using the catheter as soon as the following day. Take stool softeners as directed. Temporary side effects may include mild discomfort, fatigue, changes in bowel patterns, or loss of appetite. Call the Murrieta Valley Surgery Associates office if you develop signs of infection.

Avoid showering and heavy lifting until your provider gives you permission, and don’t go swimming. Keep any dressings in place as instructed. After you begin dialysis using your PD catheter, flush it every 7-10 days or more often if needed. Call your provider any time with questions and attend all follow-up appointments.
