For many, varicose and spider veins are an unsightly source of discomfort. In recent years, vein removal treatment has become a popular option for individuals looking to improve their confidence and appearance. While there are a number of treatment options, sclerotherapy and laser vein therapy remain popular choices for patients.
The most traditional form of vein treatment, sclerotherapy involves the injection of a salt solution into the veins. This stimulates the lining of the blood vessel, collapsing and sealing it. As the blood clots, the blood vessels turn into scar tissue and ultimately fade from view.
While considered the most effective vein treatment, sclerotherapy is more invasive, compared to laser therapy, due to the use of needles required to eliminate veins. Additionally, patients undergoing sclerotherapy for treatment of larger varicose veins may experience some minor discomfort and/or cramping during the procedure.
Following treatment, it is recommended that patients avoid physical activity for several days and discuss medications with their general physician. Prior to releasing patients following sclerotherapy, our Temecula vascular surgeons discuss at-home care and post-treatment instructions. This often includes wearing compression hosiery, and avoiding anti-inflammatory drugs for at least 48 hours.
Advanced laser vein therapy is an innovative procedure for regaining smooth legs. Simple laser treatment, performed topically, treats veins close to the surface of the skin. While some smaller spider veins can be treated in one appointment, larger veins may require several treatments.
For patients with larger veins, endovenous laser therapy is a viable option. During this procedure, laser fibers are inserted into the vein to close off the vessel. Often compared to surgical vein ligation and stripping, endovenous laser treatment is much more comfortable and has a shorter recovery time.
Similar to sclerotherapy, recovery instructions for laser vein therapy include wearing compression hosiery, avoiding anti-inflammatory drugs, and avoiding hot baths or saunas. We do recommend walking on flat surfaces at least twice a day in order to prevent the formation of blood clots in the legs.
