Treating Spider and Varicose Veins

Treating Spider and Varicose Veins

Don’t let unattractive spider and varicose veins keep you from feeling confident in your body. The MVSA Vein Center  at Murrieta Valley Surgery Associates offers a number of treatment options tailored to your needs that eliminate these aesthetic problems and results in  smoother, more appealing skin.

Spider and Varicose Veins – What are they and how are they formed?

Healthy veins carry blood to the heart through one-way valves, which are controlled by muscles. When any part of this intricate system is damaged, blood flow is halted, caused it to pool inside the vein and increase pressure. This causes the vessel wall to weaken, ultimately leading to vein swelling and twisting, which creates spider and varicose veins.

While everyone is susceptible to developing vein problems, women are about twice as likely as men to experience spider or varicose veins. Other risk factors include:

- Family history

- Occupations that require long hours of standing

- Aging

- Obesity

- Pregnancy

More than Aesthetic Issues

While many are familiar with the aesthetic implications of spider and varicose veins, few are truly familiar with the long-term impact these conditions can have on patients’ quality of life. Often, individuals with varicose veins experience aching or cramping in their legs. Others may encounter throbbing or tingling sensations in the affected area.

While spider and varicose veins often do not pose a serious health risk, some individuals may develop ulcers near the affected area. In some patients, varicose veins can become inflamed and form superficial blood clots, a condition called Thrombophlebitis . Proactive vein treatment with our Board Certified Vascular Surgeons can help prevent or treat these side effects.

Treatment Options

The Vein Center at Murrieta Valley Surgery Associates offers a wide range of treatment options for patients looking to eliminate spider and varicose veins. Procedures offered by our Vascular Surgeons include:

Sclerotherapy – During treatment, a sclerosing agent is directly injected into the affected veins, which causes them to close. Within several weeks, veins dissipate and skin looks clearer and smoother.

Cutera Excel V - Transcutaneous Laser: Ideal for the smallest stubborn spider veins on all skin types. Excel V offers the broadest capabilities to treat  vascular lesions on the legs using long-pulse Nd:YAG laser technology. This procedure boasts high success rates as well as a comfortable and no down time option for patients.

Radiofrequency Ablation: This procedure is indicated when patients present with symptomatic reflux in the saphenous vein. With ultrasound guidance, a small catheter is inserted into the incompetent vein and delivers radiofrequency energy. Over the course of treatment, the wall of the diseased vein becomes inflamed.  After the closure of the saphenous vein, the reflux is resolved and  the blood flow is re directed to the healthier veins.

Microphlebectomy : For patient with varicose veins that are too big for laser or sclerotherapy, microphlebectomy is the procedure of choice. Under local anesthesia and micro incisions, the diseased veins are removed with special vein hooks.

Laser Vein Therapy

Cutera Excel V

To help patients regain confidence in their appearance, the Vein Clinic at Murrieta Valley Surgery Associates offers a variety of office based  non invasive treatments. Using the Cutera Excel V™ laser, our team offers an alternative to traditional sclerotherapy. With this state-of-the-art treatment, our team can eliminate the appearance of spider veins quickly and successfully.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are clusters of tiny blood vessels that develop close to the surface of skin. Caused by damage to the valves that control blood flow within veins, there are several factors that can lead to the development of spider veins, including age, heredity, and hormonal changes.

While spider veins are typically considered a cosmetic nuisance, there are certain health implications created by the condition. In instances where improper blood flow prevents oxygen from reaching the skin or veins from working properly, patients can be at risk for skin ulcers, be prone to easy bleeding, and may experience vein inflammation. In extreme cases where blood clots form in the swollen or damaged vein, individuals may be at risk of thrombosis. Before being offered any kind of vein treatment, patients are examined by a board certified Vascular Surgeon, and treatment options are individualized.

Where Can Cutera Excel Vbe Used?

The  Nd:YAG laser is designed to specifically target hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Laser light is then absorbed by the hemoglobin, which stimulates blood coagulation and seals off spider veins. After treatment, the vessels slowly fade and are reabsorbed by the body.

- Varicose veins:  blood vessels that usually develop on the legs or ankles, which can appear thick and raised.

- Reticular veins or feeder veins: superficial veins that become enlarged due to an increase in pressure. These can appear blue and green.

- Spider veins or telangectasias: small twisted blood vessels that appear on the legs  in a spider web pattern.

For patients with more extensive vascular problems, Murrieta Valley Surgery Associates offers a number of other minimally invasive treatment options more appropriate for stubborn vascular issues, particularly larger bulging varicose veins.

Who is a Candidate?

Cutera Excel V™ laser therapy is ideal for:

- Patients with spider veins in the legs and ankles

- Patients fearful of needles

- Patients who are allergic to the chemical used in sclerotherapy

- Patients with patches of multiple spider veins or veins that are too small to be injected.
